The SHOP Direct Enrollment Program
The SHOP Direct Enrollment option will be available to small businesses beginning on April 1, 2014. This program was created for those employers who are interested in purchasing an MHBE-certified SHOP plan on behalf of their employees in order to access the Small Business Tax Credit through the IRS in 2014. Because the online SHOP exchange is not yet available through Maryland Health Connection, small employers, with the assistance of a SHOP-authorized broker, may purchase a SHOP plan directly from participating medical and dental insurance carriers. For more information about this program or to learn more about available plans, please contact an authorized broker for assistance and read these SHOP Direct Enrollment FAQs.
How you can get started
Complete the SHOP Eligibility Calculation. A step-by-step guide for how to complete the calculation is included in the calculation document.
Complete the SHOP Application for Employers and share it with Maryland Health Connection to determine your eligibility to purchase a SHOP health insurance plan. Use the SHOP Application Checklist to accurately complete your application.
Contact an authorized insurance broker or work directly with the private insurance companies to compare and select from the SHOP plans they offer. Full plan details can be found on the Insurance Companies Directory for SHOP page.
*STEPS 2 and 3: Small employers can shop and compare plans before submitting an application (or while an application is pending) with Maryland Health Connection. Please contact an authorized insurance broker to discuss your options. However, an application must be completed to qualify for small employer tax credits with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.
Do you have questions about the SHOP Direct Enrollment Process or need enrollment assistance? Here’s who to call:
Authorized Insurance Brokers
Maryland Health Connection has partnered with insurance brokers throughout the country who can help you understand your insurance plan options. These licensed professionals have the knowledge and experience to guide you through the process of selecting a plan that works for your business. A directory of insurance brokers by Maryland Health Connection is available to help you find the plan. The directory will be updated weekly as more authorized insurance brokers ask to be included.
These professionals will display the logo to the left on their materials, and their names will be listed in Maryland Health Connection as consumer assistance workers. There is no fee when you use an Authorized Insurance Broker.
Producer Referral Program
If you would like to have the assistance of an insurance representative to assist in enrolling you and your employees in a healthcare plan, Maryland Health Connection has made arrangements to provide this service to you, at no additional cost. If you would like to have the services of a local producer, you may call this number toll-free 877-304-9934 or 410-268-6877. You will be given the name of one or more producer, and also information on the producer’s association membership, if any. A producer does not have to be a member of an association to participate in the program.
Through SHOP Direct Enrollment, small business employers must work with authorized insurance brokers to purchase plans. If you choose, you can contact an insurance company directly for information about SHOP plans:
